In fact, during the few weeks following perihelion, the orbital geometry between the comet and the Earth has the distance between the two rapidly shrink. Most comets, however, continue to remain quite active for a few weeks after passing the sun and this will be good so far as the comet's visibility for us is concerned. It will then begin to move away from the sun. But at perihelion (its closest approach to the sun) on January 12th, C/2022 E3 will get no closer than 103.4 million miles (166.4 million km). The vast majority of comets fall into this category, but C/2022 E3 (ZTF) may end up ranking as exceptionally bright so far as most common comets go, since for a short while it may hover right at the cusp of naked-eye visibility (for those fortunate enough to be blessed with dark, non-light polluted night skies).įor a comet to become readily visible without optical aid, it usually needs to approach closer to the sun than the Earth (92.95 million miles or 149.56 million km). Then there are the common comets, of which most are only visible either with good binoculars or a telescope. The last such comet to do that was comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) in July 2020. (Image credit: Gianluca Masi) Bright among "common" cometsĬomets can be broken down into two basic categories:īright comets - the kind that can excite those of us without binoculars or telescopes - appear on average perhaps two or three times every 15 to 20 years. To observers of antiquity, comets resembled a stellar head trailed by long hair, so they called comets, "hairy stars."Ĭomet C/2022 E3 ZTF photographed from Rome, Italy on Sept. The solar wind blows this material out into an appendage we call the tail. We call this cloud of gas the head or coma.Īs the gases warm and expand, particles of dust that were embedded in the comet's nucleus are also released into space. We know that comets are composed primarily of frozen gases that are heated as they approach the sun and made to glow by the sun's light. So, this will be the comet's last time to "perform" for us. Such an orbit is not closed, so after it sweeps around the sun C/2022 E3 will move back out into deep space, never to return again. The latest orbital elements suggest that the comet is currently traveling on an orbital path with an eccentricity of 1.00027, or in other words, a parabolic orbit. If we take these calculations at face value, then the last people to look up and witness this visitor from the depths of the outer solar system, were likely very early Homo sapiens or Neanderthals.īut this may very well be the last time that C/2022 E3 comes our way again. Its last passage through the inner solar system apparently came during the Upper Paleolithic or Old Stone Age. After enough observations were gathered to compute an orbit, astronomers determined C/2022 E3 to have an orbital period of roughly 50,000 years.

![]() ![]() ![]() There are libraries of preset sounds available, but you shouldn’t need to cheat with those – basic amplifier tones are easily dialled up on the Katana’s top panel, and navigating the effects on screen is every bit as intuitive. Having found one of those USB cables, we now connect our amp to the Tone Studio software and really open up our options. Get carried away here and things can easily spiral off down a 1980s soft-metal plughole, but the factory-loaded effects are reliably ‘Boss’ in terms of audio quality. But as with the 50-watt model, it’s in the four high-gain modes that this amp really cranks up the fun factor – especially when we start adding delay, reverb and modulation to the mix. Switching to ‘crunch’ brings a major leap in aggression, much like hopping from a blackface amp to a plexi. Single-coils through either of the two clean models remain totally pristine most of the way around the gain control, and when the breakup does come, it’s free of digital harshness. In fact, while we’re impressed by the sheer power of this thing in 100-watt mode, it’s good news for the tinnitus (and the neighbours) that its output can easily be switched down to 50-watts or even a bedsit-friendly 0.5-watt.Īt all output settings, the sound scores highly for clarity and ‘bigness’. Of course, 100 solid-state watts aren’t going to be anywhere near as loud as the valve equivalent, but that’s still more than enough for today’s stages. Like that amp, it’s made in Malaysia using fibreboard construction and feels solid enough, if not exactly ultra-robust. If your reference point for 2×12 combos is a Fender Twin Reverb or Marshall Bluesbreaker, you’ll find this a refreshingly un-hospitalising amp to pick up one-handed – although it’s still almost twice the weight of the single-speaker Katana-50 MkII. In our tests, it appeared to prevent some of the more intrusive banner-ad tracking we’ve been subject to on the web, although one travel agent’s adverts appeared to slip through the net. However, there’s no way for users to add other sites/services to the preset blacklist or block tracking outright (Microsoft claims this would have unwanted consequences, such as preventing embedded YouTube videos from playing). Microsoft has worked with leading privacy groups to create a blacklist of online tracking services, which users can switch on from the Safety menu. Difficulty in this case is mostly something we can alter with the population multiplier, by increasing the number of enemies that spawns in relation to how many spawn zones are in the map. This is more or less the way the Ratchet and Clank games managed their difficulty, and it seemed like it could be a good fit for our game to make caves enemy encounters feel more organic and natural yet still be able to alter difficulty for players. Good question! It does indeed mean that we can't (or perhaps shouldn't to be consistent) just toss more enemies at the players when things are looking too easy but instead we make up for it by ensuring the next cave they visit will be more challenging. The game centers on a crew of players operating a submarine descending into an abyss called the Living Infinite, battling against the hostile environment along the way. The game world is separated into a variety of biomes, each with their own visual style and enemies for the players to fight. Leftover money and experience is accumulated after each run, allowing players to purchase new items, weapons, and submarines before taking on the Living Infinite again. Items can also be found in undersea locations, including caves requiring players to fight through enemies on foot, a crab called the Trash Hermit can provide items at random, ship upgrades can be obtained by defeating robotic Lair Guardians, or purchased from undersea civilizations. Though focused on multiplayer, there is a singleplayer option in which the rest of the crew is replaced by crew bots, who can operate the ships weapons, heal the player, fight off enemies, and assist in repairing the submarine.
